Born John Francis on February 7, 1875 in New York City, he was the son of Patrick Hughes and Addie Galvin. He professed his Passionist vows on August 13, 1895. During studies he suffered from tuberculosis. In order to try to bring a sense of comfort to him his superiors tried to have him live in ideal climates. He was ordained on January 18, 1903. After ordination his sickness continued and resulted in his death. Holy Cross Province was established in 1906. Father Hughes is the first member of the newly established province to die.
