Born John Toomey in Peirmont, NewYork on July 8, 1852 he spent his early childhood in Dunkirk, New York where he met the Passionists and served as an altar boy at St. Mary’s Parish. He professed his vows on September 11, 1868. He was ordained December 8, 1875 at Holy Cross Church, Cincinnati, Ohio. He died on October 19, 1889 at Mt Hope Sanitarium near Baltimore, Maryland at the institution of the Sisters of Charity for the mentally afflicted. He was a man of weak health and constitution. He suffered a mental breakdown on April 28, 1882 while he was at St. Paul of the Cross Monastery, Pittsburgh. Over the several years of his hospitalization he did have moments of peaceful reflection and would speak of his Passionist companions. He was buried from West Hoboken.
