Born in Dansville, New York on September 13, 1932, he was the son of Leo and Agnes Freiner Engle. He was a graduate of St. Mary’s Grade School and Dansville Central High School in 1950. He attended Niagra University and then graduated from Holy Cross Seminary, Dunkirk, New York. He was professed on July 16, 1955 in Jamaica, New York and ordained on April 28, 1960 in Union City, New Jersey by Bishop Cuthbert O’Gara, C.P. He ministered as a Director of Passionist students at Dunkirk, New York, and Jamaica, New York and worked with the novices in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Parish assignments included the Passionist parishes in Mexico City, Mexico; Union City, New Jersey; and Brighton, Massachusetts. In addition, he served in the Philippines and Jamaica, West Indies, and on the parish staff in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
