Born Joseph E. Murray in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania on February 13, 1910 he was the son of William and Ellen Corbett Murray. After attending local schools he went to Holy Cross Seminary, Dunkirk, New York. on August 15, 1930 he professed after his novitiate at the Passionist monastery, West Springfield, Massachusetts. He was sent for studies in Rome, Italy and was ordained on June 6, 1936 in the Lateran Arch Basilica by Cardinal Marchetti Selgvagianni. Father Murray received a doctorate in theology from the Angelicum University. Among his various assignments were Lector of Sacred Theology, Director of Students, Vice Rector, and Master of Novices. He wrote for several theological journals and liturgical journals. After living many years at West Springfield he spent the last part of his life with the Shrewsbury, Massachusetts community and in the Nursing Home across the street.
