Born Andrew Ebert on April 7, 1851, he was the son of David Ebert and Eva Kremer. When he was a young boy he went with his friends to the Hackensack River in New Jersey. After swimming they became hungry. Seeing the monastery up the hill they decided to go up there and ask for refreshments. Received with open arms, the young man continued to visit and then decided to enter. He was professed on April 12, 1867. His religious name was Sylvester. He was assigned to studies at Dunkirk, New York and then West Hoboken, New Jersey and Baltimore, Maryland where he was ordained on December 23, 1874. His first assignment was Dunkirk where he was a preacher of parish missions in upper New York state. His next assignment was Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, then Cincinnati, Ohio and Normandy, Missouri. He then returned to Pittsburgh. He would bless people with the relic. He was also a talented musician and respected theologian.
