Born Edward Gavacan on May 2, 1865 in New York City, he was the son of Edward Gavagan and Bridget Connoly. As a young boy he lost both his parents and was cared for by his aunt. He entered the Passionist novitiate at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and professed his vows on October 7, 1884. He was ordained a priest on June 11, 1892. After sacred eloquence he was assigned as assistant pastor of St. Ann’s Parish, Normandy, Missouri for two years. He then was a preacher of parish missions and retreats and was known as a kind confessor and for his ability to deliver instructional sermons concerning the faith. About 1928 it was discovered that he had a serious heart ailment. He still served as chaplain at a variety of institutions and convents such as the Good Shepherd Convent, Pittsburgh.
