Born William Schmidt on February 4, 1860 in Neunkirchen, Germany, he came with his family to the United States in 1872 and settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He entered the Passionists and professed his vows on October 28, 1879 and was ordained a priest on October 28, 1885 in West Hoboken, New Jersey. He was assistant pastor at St. Michael’s Parish, Pittsburgh from 1890 until 1893. He then went to Cincinnati, Ohio where he was rector. In 1897 he returned to the parish in Pittsburgh.
