In 1944, Passionist Father Cormac Shanahan visited Communist leader MaoZedong in Yenan, China. At that time Father Shanahan was living in Chungking [Chongging, Sichuan province] as news correspondent for the short-lived Catholic newspaper China Correspondent. It was in that capacity, and with approval of the Nationalist government, that Shanahan and other foreign correspondents Harrison Foreman, Gunther Stein, Israel Epstein, Po Chen-ko, leader of the Tass News Agency in China, Morris Votaw, as well as nine Chinese correspondents had made the visit to learn about Communist life and leadership. Of special interest to Father Shanahan was the place of religion in Communist society.
