Lent 2022: Katherine Burton. How her monthly column “Woman to Woman” defined a feminine voice of faith in The Sign Magazine, a Passionist publication

From 1933-1969, Katherine Kurz Burton addressed issues of Catholic culture and Catholic feminine identity in her monthly column ‘Woman to Woman.” It was the longest continuous running monthly column about women or written by a woman in any Catholic periodical in the United States.

As seen above, her monthly essay ” Where Are the Women?” The Sign Vol 48 (January 1969), p. 46, Burton reflected on the importance of deaconesses in Church tradition and St. Joan’s Alliance which sought “to revise canon law in regard to women’s eligibility to the deaconate.”

Lenten Meditation: As we continue through March, Women’s History Month, let us ask how the past writings of Katherine Burton urge us to remember the various ways women carry their cross in life. Indeed, the faith of women shape and are part of the ongoing Passionist spirituality and charism.
